"It takes dedication and full absorption into the history of architecture as well as world history to become an architect."

Hugh Newell Jacobsen, FAIA July 2007

"There are only two things in art - humanity or its lack. The mere form, some detail in itself, does not create humanity. We have today enough of superficial and rather bad architecture which is modern."
Alvar Aalto, 1957

"The purpose of architecture is to create an atmosphere in which man can live, work, and enjoy."
Minoru Yamasaki, quoted on the Minoru Yamasaki Associates, Inc. web site.

"Architecture is a verb.  It never stops changing."
Professor, Carlo Pellicia, UVA - 1978

Quote context
A graduate student, on the day prior to presentation, was inking her drawings.  Her professor, Carlo Pellicia, stopped to discuss her work.  In a few minutes he advised her to modify a central portion of the layout, simplifying her intent and making clear her parti.  Silent for a moment she exclaimed, “I just want it to stop changing.  I just want to finish the drawing.”
Carlo replied, “Architecture is a verb.  It never stops changing.”
